Essential Oil Glossary

Basil (Ocimum Basilicum)
The essential oil is steam distilled from the leaves and
flowering tops.   It is restorative and good for mental fatigue.

Bergamot (Citrus bergamia)
The essential oil is cold extracted from the peel of the fruit.
It is the most delicate of all citrus plants and needs a special
climate and soil.   Soothing yet uplifting according to
individual needs.

Cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum)
Native to the Middle and Far East, the essential oil is steam
distilled from the seeds.   It is what gives Indian chai tea a
warm, spicy flavor.   Uplifting yet soothing.

Cedarwood (Cedrus atlantica)
Extracted by steam distillation from wood.   The lumber was
used to build ancient temples.   It has a stimulating,
elevating and opening effect on the mind.

Chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile)
The essential oil is extracted by steam distillation of the
flowering heads.   Chamomile is calming and helpful for
people who worry a lot.

Cinnamon (Cinnamomum zelylanicum)
The essential oil is extracted by steam distillation from both
leaf and bark.   Stimulating and restorative.

Clove (Syzygium aromaticum)
The essential oil is steam distilled from unopened dry
flower buds.   Revitalizing and comforting.

Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus)
Essential oil is extracted from the leaves and twigs.   A
traditional household remedy in Australia and can be found
here at local drugstores in vapor rubs.   Refreshing and
purifying.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare)
Essential oil extracted by steam distillation of crushed seeds.
Stimulating and balancing.

Fir (Abies alba)
Essential oil is steam distilled from twigs and needles.
Stimulating and energizing.

Frankincense (Boswellia carteri)
Essential oil is steam distilled from the oleo gum resin.
Valued for thousands of years for meditation and prayer,
it has a soothing and elevating effect that is calming for the
mind and body.

Geranium (Pelargonium graveoloens)
Essential oil is steam distilled from leaves, stalks and
flowers.   Balancing and soothing yet revitalizing.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale)
Essential oil is steam distilled from the sun-dried rhizomes.
Stimulating and uplifting.

Grapefruit (Citrus paradisi)
The essential oil is cold pressed from the peel.
Revitalizing and balancing.

Jasmine (Jasminum officinale)
Usually a solvent is extracted into a concrete, then the
absolute is obtained from the concrete by separation with
alcohol. Known as the "King of flowers," it is euphoric,
intoxicating and uplifting.

Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)
The essential oil is extracted by steam distillation of the
flowering tops.   It is highly regarded for its relaxing,
calming and soothing properties.

Lemon (Citrus limon)
The essential oil is extracted by cold expression from the
outer part of the fresh peel.   It is refreshing, stimulates the
mind and is purifying for the air.

Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus
Essential oil is steam distilled from the fresh and partially
dried leaves. It is invigorating and lifts the spirits.

Lime (Citrus aurantifolia)
The essential oil is cold extracted from the peel of the unripe
fruit.   It is stimulating and purifying.

Mandarin (Citrus reticulata)
The essential oil is cold extracted from the outer peel.   It is
cheerful and has an uplifting quality.

Marjoram (Origanum majorana)
sential oil is steam distilled from the dried flowering herb. It
is comforting and relaxing.

Nutmeg (Myristica fragrans)
The essential oil is steam distilled from the dried seeds.   It
is stimulating and good for mental focus.

Orange (Citrus sinensis)
The essential oil is cold pressed from the almost ripe outer
peel.   It is soothing, calming and comforting.

Palmarosa (Cymbopogon martini)
The essential oil is steam distilled from the fresh or dried
grass.   It is said to be able to refresh and clarify the mind.   
It is closely related to Ginger grass.

Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin)
The essential oil is steam distilled from dried leaves.
It has an earthy and grounding quality.

Peppermint (Mentha piperita)
The essential oil is steam distilled from the flowering tops.
It is refreshing and mentally stimulating.

Petitgrain (Citrus aurantium)
The essential oil is steam distilled from the leaves and twigs.
It refreshes the mind and soothes the emotions.

Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis)
The essential oil is steam distilled from the leaves, tops and
flowers.   It is energizing and good for mental clarity.

Spearmint (Mentha spicata )
The essential oil is steam distilled from the flowering tops. It
can be joyful and helpful for stress relief.

Tangerine (Citrus reticulata)
The essential oil is cold pressed from the peel.   It is from the
same botanical source as Mandarin but  represents a lower
stage in the development of the fruit as it tends to be
harvested earlier, has a deeper orange color and a slightly
weaker aroma.   It is soothing and helpful for stress relief.

Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia)
The essential oil is steam distilled from leaves and twigs.
It has a long history of use in Australia for healing of a
variety of ailments.   It is know for its antibacterial

Ylang Ylang (Cananga odorata)
